Federal Geographic Data Committee adopted our proposed goals of Autonomous GIS

We recently learned that the U.S. Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) adopted our proposed Autonomous GIS goals as part of its Spatial Data Infrastructure Modernization 2026-2027 objectives.

SDI Artificial Intelligence (SDI-AI) – SDI architecture and standards, research and development of GEOAI, AIAgents, large language model’s (LLM’s) to support self-generating, self-organizing, self-verifying, self executing and autonomous automation.

We appreciate FGDC’s acknowledgment of our work on Autonomous GIS, which proposed five autonomous goals: self-generating, self-organizing, self-verifying, self-executing, and self-growing. We understand that the first four goals can now be achieved and measured to some degree, while the remaining one, self-growing, remains under exploration. We hope AI models can learn on their own in the near future.

This adoption strongly encourages our work to promote autonomous GIS. Years ago, our team realized that the next-generation GIS should be AI-powered, and technological human intervention will be largely reduced. In 2026, AI coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex showed credible progress and massively increased coding efficiency. However, they still struggle to understand geospatial data; we still have a long way to go to advance autonomous GIS.
